ABOUT KIM CORNELL: YOGA INSTRUCTOR
I completed my 200 Hour Teacher Training at the Shala in 2012, training in Vinyassa style yoga. (Sequencing poses in a special way)
I have also attended many Iyengar workshops, fine tuning alignment of poses. I enjoy teaching creatively sequenced classes, mixing in an energetic flow with holding and deepening poses.
I always start my classes with deep stretches and warmups of the areas of the body we will focus on,
and then we work up to a peak pose.
I have a focus each week on a particular area of the body, which relates to emotional release in that area. I use yoga as a tool to bring inner awareness, and allow suppressed emotions to surface, so that they can be processed and let go of, if willing.
Releasing tension in our muscles and tissue/fascia through our yoga practice, helps to clear our body/"temple" of physical toxins, and also clear emotional blockages, on a deeper level.
Bringing lightness into blocked areas of our body, helps us on our path of spiritual transformation by shifting behavioral patterns that hold us back.
The yoga brings us to a place of inner stillness, beyond our minds, where we can access our hearts, and allow the healing to happen. Some breathing/ pranayama practice at the beginning or end of a class, takes us further inwards where our inner guidance resides, connecting to our Higher Self.
I grew up in Cape Town, and at school my interests were making clothes, modern dancing and swimming. I studied Journalism and Psychology at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. I moved to Johannesburg where I worked in the film industry for ten years as a stylist, which was exciting but the long hours left little balance in my life.
When I fell pregnant with twins, I decided to slow down my hectic lifestyle and moved to an Animal Training Farm in Botriver with my family. Ten years later, after my divorce, I moved to Hermanus, where I am now teaching yoga at various studios, gyms and private clients.
Since my 20’s, yoga has been a support that always brought me back to myself when I was stressed, overwhelmed or disconnected from my true self. It has helped ground me and inspires me on my spiritual path. It is an essential lifestyle to me, that helps me to live my life with integrity. After a class, my perspective can change 100%.
I have attended workshops in various styles of yoga with the following teachers: Simon Ben Shimon, Patrick Krielman, Simon Rowe (Prana Vinyassa – love that!) , David Reglin, David Jacobs and various Iyenger teachers.
I spent some time at the Osho Ashram in India, discovering many forms of movement meditation.
I also created a small clothing range of yogawear called "Kimstar" in Hermanus.
